My name is Allison. I’m a writer, a filmmaker and as of April 10th 2011, I am breast cancer fighter. I love to travel, I write all of my first drafts on yellow legal pads with papermate #2 mechanical pencils, pumpkin is my favorite food and I’ve never been a fan of bios.
The Why? Foundation came to life when I was diagnosed with cancer and my friends, colleagues, caregivers and I could not find the type of resources we were looking for. I wanted facts over fundraising and the reality of the process over the cancer dipped in chocolate “you’re going to be ok” talk.
As we learn we grow here at The Why? Foundation. We learn from my cancer and unfortunately from the growing number of people that it has touched in our immediate and extended circle. We talk to everyone who is willing about what they need in a cancer fighting resource and I’m very proud to say one thing we also do very well is Listen.
Although it is a part of my whole, cancer is not all of me. I am currently directing a documentary about the infamous Hong Kong Cafe, a punk rock club that infiltrated Chinatown Los Angles in 1979 and raised a brilliant havoc until 1981. I have Side Effects, a no apologies web series produced by Crypt TV, in the can and preparing for release. I’m settling in to write a new book and enjoying my time expanding and refining The Why? Foundation.
It’s a pretty terrific life all the way around, but again, to sum a person up in a bio, it’s just not my style. In every moment of every day we change, we grow. It’s awesome and if we are lucky it is unpredictably incredible.
In the words of songwriter Shelly Peiken (made famous though the voice of Meredith Brooks, … I’m a little bit of everything / All rolled into one
I’m a bitch, I’m a lover
I’m a child, I’m a mother
I’m a sinner, I’m a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I’m your hell, I’m your dream
I’m nothing in between
You know you wouldn’t want it any other way…
