Fighting Cancer With Fashion

What do I wear going through breast cancer treatment?
What can I buy someone going through cancer treatment?
How can I help my friend/mother/sister/ daughter/grandmother/wife pick out an outfit while their going through breast cancer treatment?
On April 11, 2011 I found a lump in my breast. Three days later I was diagnosed with stage 3a cancer and my world turned upside down.
Appearance was a big part of it.
As a woman who was facing losing a breast and all of the hair on my body, it was important to my emotional state to feel good about how I looked.
On the one hand it seemed crazy to be thinking about fashion while my life was on the line, but on the other it seemed even crazier not to. Breasts are a representation of femininity and of being a woman, and so is how we wear our hair.
Every morning putting myself together with personal style helped me prepare for the fight. It was part of my armor. Cancer didn’t get to take looking good away from me.
Beyond the emotions wrapped up in appearance, my cancer fight brought with it a need for practical fashion. The barrage of doctor appointments and tests that had become a part of my daily life, along with three surgeries which restricted my range of motion, made getting dressed a challenge. How each garment in my closet was constructed became a very big deal. It was important to be wearing fairly loose, easy on-and-off clothing all the time.
In addition, being a cancer fighter wasn’t my only role in this world. I was still a 38 year-old woman with a full life at work and at home with an unparalleled passion for living. Finding a look that I was comfortable with was a big part of things feeling normal for me, and finding normal was more important to me than anything.
At the end of the day, how we look is a huge component of the fight for most of us. Together, Piper and I are working to help cancer fighting women find their strength, embrace their beauty and fight with fashion.
Piper’s collection is shown here to demonstrate how a breast cancer fighter can rearrange her closet or go out shopping so she can put her best, most practical and most comfortable, fashion foot forward through all aspects of the fight.
