So what should one look for while shopping on her own? First, start by looking for products that are all-natural and then look into the purity of the ingredients, says Dr. Amin Merhadi, an LA based radiation oncologist. Be mindful of how many ingredients are listed on the label: the fewer ingredients that are in a product, the smaller the chance that you will be allergic to something in it. “Your skin filters out a huge amount of toxins—it’s like your third kidney,” says Merhadi. “So it makes sense to use pure products so that your skin doesn’t have to work over time to filter out toxins.” To be specific, Dr. Merhadi says that everyone – not just women facing cancer – should avoid products that include synthetic fragrance, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, talc, and formaldehyde-releasing ingredients like Diazolidinyl Urea & Imidazolidinyl Urea. Steer clear of these ingredients while shopping for nail polish, skincare, makeup and haircare.
